Testing Items

It’s important for you to know what is allowed on your exam. This information will come from your instructor directly ahead of time. If you have questions about what is allowed, ask your professor. This may include a specific calculator, formula sheet, notes, or other items.

    • Scratch paper is provided by the Exam Center. You may not bring your own, unless specified. All notes and scratch papers are kept by the Exam Center after the test is completed.
    • We can provide graphing, scientific, and basic calculators for student use; however, availability is limited, and calculators are provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
    • If your exam is on a computer, we will provide the computer, webcam, and other items as needed.
The Exam Center is a secure testing environment. We recommend that students do not bring backpacks, purses, or other non-testing items. Personal items, including phones and keys, must be stored in the secure locker area before testing. Items not allowed in the Exam Center include:

    • Electronic Devices: Smart phones, smart watches, smart glasses, and similar devices are not allowed. E-books on personal devices are also not permitted.
    • Jackets and Hoodies: Jackets and hoodies are not allowed in the Exam Center. Students are encouraged to avoid wearing bulky clothing to help make the check-in process easier.
    • Hats and Head Coverings: Hats, caps, beanies, and other head coverings are not permitted during testing unless they are worn for religious, cultural, medical, or disability-related reasons.
    • Food and Drinks: Food is not allowed in the testing space unless a specific exception is made by the Accommodations Office. Only clear water bottles are permitted.
Please arrive at the Chap Success Center Exam Center at least 20 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow time for check-in. The Exam Center is located on the 2nd Floor of the Learning Resource Center (LRC) at Midland College.

Be sure to bring your photo ID and any approved testing items listed above.

Students may not arrive late for their appointment. To avoid disturbing other testers, check-in closes at the start of the scheduled testing time.

ORAL READER

Students should clearly communicate that they need an oral reader to their instructors prior to testing.

The Exam Center uses the NVDA Screen Reader for students who need an oral reader for an exam. NVDA is compatible with most digital exams, and paper exams may be scanned and read digitally when appropriate. We will work with your instructor to help ensure the exam content is readable by the system. However, students should still contact their instructor before testing to confirm that NVDA is compatible with the exam format and approved for use.

EXTRA TIME OR ISOLATED SPACE

Extra time will be given based on the students' approved accommodations. An isolated space can be provided to students. The is equipped with a camera for proctoring purposes.

BREAKS

Students who require breaks during an exam will be allowed breaks according to their approved accommodations. Breaks are typically no more than five minutes unless otherwise stated in the accommodation instructions.

Electronic devices and personal items will not be returned until the exam is fully completed. If a student needs specific accommodation-related items during a break or during testing, they must notify the front desk before entering the Exam Center.

DEVICE-RELATED NEEDS

If your approved accommodations require access to an electronic device, you may be seated near the proctor. The device must remain silent and positioned, so it is clearly visible to both you and the proctor during the exam.

Each situation may be different, so please communicate with Exam Center staff before testing if you have specific accommodation-related needs.

The Exam Center is committed to maintaining a secure and fair testing environment. Cheating is not allowed on any exam or quiz.

Any suspected or confirmed academic dishonesty will be documented and reported to the student’s instructor. Students may also be referred to the Student Conduct Office for further review.
