First Generation Student Initiatives
Starting college as a first-generation student can come with unique challenges, but with the right support, you can overcome them and achieve your goals. That’s why Midland College created the First-Generation Advising Initiative—a program designed to guide you through your college journey with care, understanding, and expert advice.
Why This Matters
Research shows that first-generation students often face obstacles that can affect academic success, persistence, and graduation rates. Our initiative focuses on identifying those challenges early, providing targeted support, and building strong advisor-student relationships to keep you motivated and on track.
How It Works
- Opt-In for Support: As a first-gen student, you can choose to participate in the program by opting in for specialized advising.
- Tailored Guidance: Once enrolled, you’ll be connected with an Academic Advisor who understands the first-gen experience and will work with you to create personalized strategies for success.
- Regular Check-Ins: Expect to meet with your advisor at least twice each semester (fall and spring) to discuss progress, address concerns, and plan your next steps.
What to Expect
This program isn’t just about academic planning—it’s about fostering connections, building confidence, and ensuring you have the tools and support to thrive in college and beyond.

This inclusive and welcoming community is designed for first-generation students—whether you’re transitioning straight from high school or returning to college after time away. If your parents didn’t complete a 2- or 4-year degree, this is your space to connect, grow, and thrive.
