Integrated Reading and Writing DevelopmentIRWD

Midland College Integrated Reading and Writing (IRWD) courses are designed to provide learning opportunities of several kinds:

  • Developmental instruction for those who need to do compensatory work in order to reach reading and writing competence in compliance with the Texas Success Initiative;

  • Work in comprehension, writing skills, vocabulary and reading rate for students wishing to enhance their college reading, writing, and studying abilities; and work to enhance comprehension, vocabulary and reading rates in a specified area of study or major.

IRWD 0380 - Integrated Reading & Writing I

This course surveys a variety of reading materials. Students will learn to locate explicit textual information, draw inferences, and describe, and evaluate the information within the across multiple texts of varying lengths. Students will learn how to use vocabulary effectively, describe and apply insights gained from reading and writing a variety of texts. Students will learn effective editing strategies, generate ideas from texts, and recognize and apply the conventions of Standard English. This course is not for college credit. The reading TSI score will calculate placement in this course. Students in this course are required to take a co-requisite PREP 0370 student success course. All students must sign up for the co-requisite IRWD 0181 lab.

IRWD 0381 - Integrated Reading & Writing II

This course surveys a variety of reading materials. Students will learn to locate explicit textual information, draw complex inferences, and describe, analyze, and evaluate the information within the across multiple texts of varying lengths. Students will learn how to use vocabulary effectively, describe and apply insights gained from reading and writing a variety of texts. Students will learn effective editing strategies, generate ideas from texts, recognize and apply the conventions of Standard English, and compose college-level writing assignments. This course is not for college credit. The reading TSI score will calculate placement in this course. Students in this course are required to take a co-requisite PREP 0370 student success course. All students must sign up for the co-requisite IRWD 0181 lab.
