Learning Specialists, what we call our tutors, play an important role in helping Midland College students achieve their academic goals. More than just answering questions, Learning Specialists serve as mentors, educators, and role models who empower students to become confident, independent learners.

What is a Learning Specialist?

Learning Specialists provide academic support in a welcoming, student-centered environment. Rather than completing assignments for students, tutors guide students through the learning process by asking questions, reinforcing course concepts, and helping them develop confidence to succeed independently.

Depending on your subject area, you may assist students with:

• Individual and small-group tutoring sessions
• Understanding course concepts and homework assignments
• Developing effective study strategies and learning skills
• Preparing for quizzes, exams, and major projects
• Building confidence and reducing academic anxiety
• Navigating course resources and academic technology
• Strengthening problem-solving and critical thinking skills

Our Learning Specialists support students in a variety of disciplines, including mathematics, writing, science, business, computer science, and many other academic subjects.

Professional Training & Development

Who Can Apply? 

Learning Specialist positions are open to both Midland College students and qualified community members. Applicants should demonstrate proficiency in the subject they wish to tutor. This may include:

• Successful completion of relevant coursework with a strong grade
• Equivalent academic or field experience
• Professional experience related to the subject
• Certifications, training, or other evidence of subject-matter competence

Strong candidates also communicate clearly, enjoy helping others learn, demonstrate patience and professionalism, and are committed to creating a welcoming and supportive learning environment.
