Midland College Collaborates with Renowned Author Newsome to Launch Veterans Book Club January 24, 2025
Midland College is excited to announce the launch of a Veterans Book Club, a new eight-week program that is open to the community and designed to bring all veterans, their families, and veteran supporters together for meaningful discussions and shared experiences. The weekly meetings will take place every Thursday from 5-7 p.m. in the Scharbauer Student Center Club Room, starting Jan. 30 and running through March 20. Facilitated by Dr. Bruce Oliver Newsome, a renowned author and expert in security, risk management, and military history, the book club will explore themes such as military service, war, PTSD, injury, rehabilitation, and transitioning to civilian life. Participants will engage in open discussions inspired by the weekly reading materials, creating a space for Veterans to share their stories and connect with others who understand their journey. “The Veterans Book Club is an opportunity for our Veterans to come together in a supportive environment to share their stories and engage with literature that reflects their unique experiences,” said Daniel Ortega, MC’s Director of Veteran Services. “This program underscores Midland College’s commitment to serving those who have served our country.” The program is free of charge, with all books provided through federal funding. The first week’s reading is "The White Donkey," a graphic novel that explores the complexities of military life and is freely available online at here or here. Dr. Newsome, the facilitator, brings a wealth of expertise to the program. His most recent works include "Sir Basil Liddell Hart: Life, Thought, Legacy" and the second edition of "Security and Risk Management". For more about Dr. Newsome, visit www.brucenewsome.com. This is not a traditional class with tests or lectures but an open forum to engage in dialogue about topics relevant to the military community. The club provides a unique opportunity to build camaraderie while exploring powerful stories and themes.
