Midland College is proud to announce that it has been awarded a $70,000 grant through the Carl D. Perkins Excellence in Access and Opportunity Program. This funding will support the launch of a new childcare assistance program specifically designed to help first-generation college students enrolled full-time in a Midland College Career & Technical Education (CTE) pathway.

“This grant reinforces Midland College’s commitment to breaking down barriers and providing access to education for all students,” said MC President Dr. Damon Kennedy. “By offering childcare assistance, we’re enabling first-generation students to focus on their studies and invest in their future careers while ensuring their children are cared for in a safe, nurturing environment.”

To qualify for the childcare assistance program, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a first-generation college student (neither parent completed a college degree or earned a degree outside of the U.S.).
  • Have a FAFSA award letter showing unmet financial need or provide documentation of financial assistance such as Veteran Education Benefits, Tuition Waiver, WIC, TANF, TRC, Medicaid, or Food Stamps.
  • Be currently enrolled as a full-time CTE major at Midland College (12 credit hours during the fall/spring semesters).
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • Attend classes that are at least 75% in person (on campus).
  • Utilize a licensed daycare in Midland and provide documentation of total childcare costs (documentation required with the application).
Students who meet the qualifications and are interested in applying for the childcare assistance program can submit the required application form or request additional information.

This initiative is part of Midland College’s mission to invest in student success and provide opportunities for all individuals to achieve their educational and career goals. By alleviating the financial burden of childcare, MC continues to empower students and strengthen the future workforce of the Permian Basin and beyond.
