Midland Independent School District news release

The healthcare industry has received more attention than ever during the past seven months. Nurses, doctors, and other medical professionals are on the front lines of the fight against COVID-19. As demand for trained workers for this field grows, MISD and Midland College (MC) are meeting this need with the Health Sciences Academy (HSA).

"The more we can build up our public service programs, the better we'll be able to serve our community, and our health science students live that out every day," said Mickala Harper, Director of Career and Technical Education for Midland ISD.

COVID-19 hasn't stood in the way of learning for these students. Juniors and seniors have continued their lab work so they can prepare for treating actual patients during the clinicals.

"It's critical that the students are well prepared for the clinicals," said HSA Coordinator Heather Escobedo. "They'll get real-life experience working in nursing homes, pharmacies, and other work sites."

Students are modeling COVID prevention practices by thoroughly cleaning each piece of equipment after use.

"It's actually good practice for them to have to completely sanitize everything," said Escobedo. "That will be the standard once they enter their careers."

HSA students can earn a variety of certifications that prepare them for a career in healthcare. Pathways include EMT, pharmacy technician, and nursing assistant. The Patient Care Technician program was introduced in the spring, and includes certifications for electrocardiography, phlebotomy and patient care.

"The pandemic has put a heightened focus on the healthcare industry," said Harper. "Our students have made the admirable decision to get in the trenches to serve our community and we are committed to equipping and supporting them in that pursuit."

In addition to Health Sciences, MISD and MC also offer a Business Management and Technology Academy and a Petroleum Academy. As a whole, MISD supports more than 25 career pathways through its Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.
