Participants shared their experiences, offering valuable insights on navigating college
life, overcoming obstacles, and making the most of available opportunities. In addition
to these sessions, attendees had the chance to learn more about MC’s educational programs,
engage with the Midland community, and enjoy complimentary breakfast and lunch.
During a panel discussion, several MC faculty and staff who were first-generation
college students themselves shared key advice.
“The first piece of advice that I’m going to give you as a first-generation graduate
speaking to first-generation students is this: If you want to take advantage of an
opportunity, you have to go and get it,” said MC Vice President of Student Services
Joseph Granado.
“Focus on communication and building your confidence,” said Cody Vasquez, MC Director
of Academic Engagement.”Once you have the confidence that you can do absolutely anything,
everything else just sort of falls into place.”
Other advice included:
- “Read, and spend time with other people who enjoy reading and learning.” - Dr. Jaime
Águila, MC Community & Family Engagement Director, Adjunct Instructor
- “Don’t let the detours deter you.” – Missy Schenkman, MC Associate Biology Professor
- “Remember that first-gen looks very different to and for everyone.” – Cindy Madewell,
MC Dean of Nursing
- “Self-reflection is crucial to your success.” – Maira Carrillo, MC Dean of Math &
Science Division
- “Don’t be afraid to ask for help.” – Stephanie Vancuren, MC Associate Professor of
Organizational Management
- “Every step in this journey makes the whole thing worth it.” – Wayne Jones, MC Transportation
Training Instructor
Students also had the opportunity to voice their experiences and concerns, making
this a well-rounded event that offered many helpful perspectives. MC’s Phi Theta Kappa
President Eriana Loya said of the event, “It was a very eye-opening and motivational
experience for me, and I hope the rest of the students here feel the same way.”
This event comes shortly after Midland College was selected as a member of the 2024-2025
cohort of the FirstGen Forward Network, a prestigious national initiative recognizing
institutions dedicated to enhancing the experiences and success of first-generation
college students. This designation highlights Midland College's ongoing commitment
to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.
Midland College continues to support first-generation students with initiatives like
these, aiming to build a community where everyone has the tools and support needed
to succeed.
