The Midland College Business & Economic Development Center (BEDC) is excited to announce
an upcoming Entrepreneur Interview featuring Michael Shapira, owner of Michael’s Charcoal
Grill. This engaging event will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 9 a.m. in the Carrasco
Room on the Midland College campus. Dr. Damon Kennedy, President of Midland College,
will lead the conversation, exploring Shapira’s journey of building a beloved local
business and his experiences as a Vietnam veteran turned entrepreneur.
Shapira’s story is a testament to perseverance, adaptability, and community support.
Initially dreaming of a career as a pilot, Shapira’s path took a different turn when
he opened Michael’s Charcoal Grill in 1986. He started with a small location on East
Illinois and, after navigating various challenges, expanded the restaurant to its
current, well-known location at the busy intersection of Wadley and A streets. Shapira
attributes his success to the kindness of others and a bit of divine intervention,
with key moments — such as a successful television commercial and a rare SBA loan
— paving the way for his restaurant's growth.
During the interview, attendees will hear first-hand insights from Shapira about the
challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship, the keys to his success, and his thoughts
on the local business landscape. The conversation aims to inspire and provide practical
advice for aspiring entrepreneurs in the community.
“We are thrilled to host this event and provide a platform for local entrepreneurs
to share their stories,” said Dr. Kennedy. “Michael Shapira’s experience is a great
example of how hard work and passion can create a lasting impact on the community.”
Light refreshments will be provided, and guests are encouraged to arrive early to
grab a seat. This is an excellent opportunity for networking, learning, and connecting
with others who share an interest in business and economic development. Shapira’s
reflections on his journey — from his early morning starts and hands-on work to his
reflections on passion and perseverance — are sure to resonate with attendees.
