On Sunday, Feb. 2, 2025, a group of 31 Midland College students traveled to Austin to participate in Community College Day at the Texas Capitol. The trip, led by MC Professor of Government and Director of the Honors Program Dr. Terry Gilmour and MC Associate Professor of Government/Political Science Ben Malone, provided students with a firsthand look at the legislative process and an opportunity to engage with state lawmakers.

Community College Day at the Capitol is a biennial event held while the Texas Legislature is in session. Students from community colleges across the state gather in Austin to learn more about government and engage with their elected officials to discuss issues relevant to them and higher education.

On Monday, Feb. 3, the group attended a rally on the Capitol steps before taking a guided tour of the Capitol building. One of the highlights of the day was a meeting with Texas State Representative Tom Craddick. Each of the 31 students had the unique opportunity to have their picture taken with Rep. Craddick in the House Chambers while also getting to use the gavel. Although Senator Kevin Sparks was not in Austin at the time, three members of his staff and his wife participated in the meeting and answered students' questions.

“This is an important trip for our students as many of them have never been to our state Capitol,” said Dr. Gilmour. “Having the opportunity to meet our elected officials in person makes the whole political process more meaningful for them.”
She continued, “The Midland College government department has always been a sponsor of the trip, but the opportunity is open to all MC students. As a government professor, any activities that encourage civic engagement are important, and being there in person is one of the best ways to make that happen. They begin to understand that their opinions do matter.”

Midland College has participated in Community College Day at the Capitol for approximately 20 years, reinforcing its commitment to student engagement in government and civic leadership. This trip continues to be an invaluable experience for MC students, providing access to and fostering a deeper understanding of state government and their role as citizens.
