On Tuesday, August 25, the Midland College Foundation will participate in Permian Basin Gives, a one-day event encouraging area residents to create meaningful impact through the nonprofits that serve our communities.  Permian Basin residents donating to area nonprofits that day will help to contribute toward the total West Texas goal of $758,500.

“Midland College is delighted to be participating in this important endeavor to highlight the wonderful work that area nonprofits do in our community,” Taylor Shorb, Midland College director of Development & Alumni Relations, said.  “Unless otherwise specified, all gifts to the Midland College Foundation on that day will go toward student scholarships.”

Erin Casey-Richardson, Midland College associate director of Scholarships, works directly with students who are needing assistance to help pay for college tuition, fees and textbooks. She said that she noticed a sizable increase in scholarship applications for the 2020 fall semester compared to fall 2019.

“We received twice as many scholarship applications as we had at this same time last year,” Casey-Richardson said.  “As everyone knows, Americans are suffering from the economic decline brought about by the Coronavirus, and West Texans are suffering even more with the added downturn in the energy industry—the economic mainstay of Midland and of the majority of Midland College students.  Thankfully, Midland College is able to award a substantial number of scholarships, but I predict that we will have as much need, if not more, for the spring semester.”

Donations to Midland College during the Permian Basin Gives event on August 25 can be made online or by calling (432) 685-4526.  All donations are tax deductible.  The Midland College Foundation, Inc. is a 501c3 organization.

“When people donate to Midland College scholarships, they are helping not only our students, but also the entire West Texas community,” Shorb explained.  “Our students are the future workforce of the Permian Basin.  A gift to Midland College scholarships helps provide the Permian Basin with a skilled workforce, educated citizens and better economic stability.”
