1. What is Google Apps Education Edition?
Google Apps Education Edition is an integrated communication and collaboration solution that Google is currently offering schools as a hosted solution for their email, calendar, and chat. Their offer includes Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Talk, and Google Docs, all using our own domain (mail.midland.edu).
- Gmail: Email storage and search tools that help students find information fast and instant messaging from right inside your account.
- Google Calendar: You can organize your schedule and share events and calendars with others.
- Google Talk: You can call or send instant messages to your contacts for free anytime, anywhere in the world.
- Google Docs: Share documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Collaborate in real-time with your team or with your whole school. You can publish final documents to the entire world, too.
At this time, Midland College will not be utilizing the Google Docs portion of Google Apps. Additional services will be provided at a later date.

2. Why did Midland College move student email over to Google Apps for Education?
The old student email system was old and outdated and went down often. It needed to be replaced IMMEDIATELY.
Midland College provided 10 Mega-bytes of storage per user. The Google Apps system provides 7 Giga-bytes of storage per user.
Your email is stored on servers residing in Google’s redundant data centers which offer increased “Up Time” and availability for your email.

4. What is the uptime for Google Apps Education Edition?
With Google Apps Education Edition, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Talk and Google Docs are guaranteed to be available at least 99.9% of the time, ensuring that users have access when they need it.

6. Did my Midland College email address change?
No. Your Midland College email address stayed the same (yourusername@mail.midland.edu). Your email is stored on servers located in Google’s data centers.

7. Did messages that existed in my old mailbox get migrated to my new Google Apps for Midland College mailbox?
Yes, but with some restrictions. Midland College has tested migrating messages from the old system to the new Google Apps system using some test accounts. The tests we conducted were successful. However, this does not guarantee that all your messages will be successfully migrated.
Items/Messages that won’t be migrated (limitations imposed by Google):
- Messages larger than 20 Mega-bytes
- Questionable/potential virus attachment types (.ini, .exe, .vbs)
- Excluded folders (trash and spam)
- Address Books / Contacts
- Calendar Items
If you need to access the old email system in order to retrieve messages or attachments that were not migrated to your new Google Apps for Midland College mailbox, you can login to the old system using the link provided below.
Your username for the old system has not changed. Your password for the old system is your social security number (no dashes). The old email system will be kept available until October 4, 2009.

8. How secure is Google Apps for Midland College?
Midland College has enabled Secure Socket Layer (SSL) connections on Google Apps. This setting forces SSL connections at the login page and when accessing most Google App services such as email, chat, calendar, and docs. SSL access is not available for Google Talk desktop client. 9. What is my Google Apps for Midland College username and password?
Your username is a composite of three items. First letter of first name, first three letters of last name, and last three digits of social security number.
Ex. John Jones with SSN of 123-45-6789
- username would be: jjon789
- email address would be: jjon789@mail.midland.edu
Your initial password is your social security number (no dashes).

10. How do I access my Google Apps for Midland College account?

11. How do I change my Google Apps for Midland College password?
- Login to Google Apps for Midland College Email application
- Click on the “Settings” link located near the upper right hand corner of the page.
- Click on the “Accounts” link.
- Click the “Change Password” link. (A new window opens which may be blocked by your pop-up blocker. If this happens, you need to temporarily allow pop-ups).
- Enter your current password
- Enter your new password
- Re-Enter your new password
- Click the “Change Password” button

12. Can I forward messages addressed to my Midland College email address to another account such as Hotmail, Gmail, or Yahoo?
Yes. You will need to login to your Google Apps for Midland College account and set the forwarding address. If you had set this up in the old email system, the setting was not transferred so you should set this up again.
- Login to Google Apps for Midland College Email application.
- Click on the “Settings” link located near the upper right hand corner of the page.
- Click on the “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” link
- Click on the Radio Button next to “Forward a copy of incoming mail to”
- Type the email address you want your mail forwarded to in the text box provided.
- Select whether you want to keep a copy of the message, archive the message or delete the message.
- Click the “Save Changes” button.

13. How long before my Google Apps for Midland College account is deleted?
Accounts are created when you first register, whether it is for Fall, Spring or Summer sessions, and is good until the Fall semester of the following year. If you don’t register for a class the following Fall semester, the account is deleted.

14. How do I get help and how long will it take?
Try to help yourself by clicking on the “Help” link located near the upper right hand corner of the page in either the email or calendar application. This will take you to the help pages maintained by Google.
You can contact the Midland College Help Desk by phone at 432-685-4788 or by email at the following address: help@midland.edu. Your request will be forwarded to the appropriate person. Keep the following in mind:
- Midland College does not have a full time email administrator for either the student or faculty/staff email systems.
- Google Apps for Midland College is new to you AND to the Midland College IT Department. We will work as quickly as we can to resolve any issues you may have.
